hello and happy valentines’ day.
before thinking – “dear lord this is going to be just another sappy story about love” – fret not. this is anything other than a sappy love story. just as how birthdays to us are to celebrate the day we came into this world – giving us an origin and purpose, – valentines’ day itself does have a story too.
to cut the long and bitter reading up you have to do, i’m going to make it simpler for all of us (the sweet sweet person I am); valentines’ day pretty much started like this:
- once upon a time, marriages between young men to women were denied because it was seen by an Emperor Claudius II, that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families (honestly what in the name of pickle juice is this – my guy was going through something, that’s for sure)
- valentine a priest, realising the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.
there. a summary. minus the “ugly” side of Valentines that is spewed all over the Internet, this refined one above basically tells us that valentines’ celebrates the sacred 4 letter word that marks something in a relationship:
L O V E. love.
nowadays, valentines’ day, being a yearly affair, becomes a lovely day of being showered in attention, flowers, chocolates, for one partner, and a filled schedule of purchases and chores for the other. it’s like the saying, all is fair in love and war.
regardless, i have to end this post off with a little wisdom of mine because why not am I right.
the problem with valentines’ isn’t the celebration or the excessive marketing that goes into what seems like a pointless holiday because – if you’re really in love, isn’t it crazily exhausting to cramp a whole year’s worth (technically 365-1=355 days) of love into 1 day? Sounds kinda sus to me.
the biggest string of wise words i can give you is to…
stop. expecting.
think about it this way – you want chocolate. but you want the expensive kinds – not the cheap ones you get off the dollar store in a mall. rather, you want the ones with the fancy casing and glorious colors. feeling this way is a huge turn-off (sorry to break it to you) and, your expectations are likely to be never met.
so yeah, happy valentines’ Day. remember to show your love every day – unless you want to become single in a heartbeat.
